Work is a place

Mechanism · A place beyond geography

Work is not a point on the map, yet it is a place where data questions take a specific local form.

In the lingo of DATA:FOUNDATION, a place is a setting where data questions are worked out in local terms. Geneva is such a place, located on the map. Work is another kind: it cuts across cities, and its questions (pay, time, evaluation, control) are shared by drivers in Geneva and couriers elsewhere. Like the infinite places of a number field, which Arakelov theory puts on equal footing with the primes, a place that is not on the map is needed for the picture to be complete.

We would assess whether WORK:DATA helps workers ask questions that a single city could not answer alone, while remaining accountable to the workers concerned.
